Family dysfunction, bigotry, anti-Semitism, and rejection are the foundation of this conflict. However, it is all overcome with compassion, generosity, acceptance, and love. Readers will feel the angst, the hatred, the religious intolerance of the supporting characters. Yet they will engage with Joe and his guardian, Grayson Pierce, moving with them through the strife and the terrifying memories of the Buchenwald concentration camp.
